Every day, every week or month, there are tools, software and yes sometimes gadgets (I love them) that I need to maintain my 2 sites.
So here is a list of pretty much everything I use and hope you find these useful. Follow me on Facebook to find out when I add more resources.
GoDaddy is where you would go to search and get a domain. Do not buy your domain with your host, even if it’s free, it’s only free for one year and that value is about $12.00US. You will thank me later if you ever have to switch hosting company as it will save you lots of headaches.
GreenGeeks has been my host now for almost 3 years and I absolutely love them. I am paying the same price for 3 years that I used to pay for one year at Bluehost! You can have unlimited websites on your one hosting account. Their support is fast and friendly. Plus they are an environmentally responsible web hosting.
Self-hosted WordPress is the free very popular platform I have been using since it was ‘invented’ for both this site and my blog SimplyLise. I install it on all my clients’ websites and once I’m done with it, clients only need to start writing their content.
You’ll find my Ultimate FREE WordPress Guide to be a complete step-by-step training which is easy to follow with images. No strings attached!
Genesis is the foundation on which your WordPress should be built on. Why? Airtight Security, Makes Site Customization Easy, Responsive Designs to name a few. And see why I only work with Genesis here.
My Favourite Go-To Genesis Themes
You’ll find beautiful feminine themes over at Restored316 Designs. The documentation and support is great. There is also an active Facebook Group to help you when you’re stuck. I kinda hang out there a lot.
At Hello You Designs, the themes are also beautiful and very image oriented. This combination makes for stunning looks. Again the support is great.
Studiopress offers over 30 themes to choose from for all kinds of blogs and businesses. I especially love this new one Mai Lifestyle as it is very versatile and easy to use.
Premium Backup for my Sites
For years I used UpdraftPlus plugin for backing up my sites to dropbox. But last year for no apparent reason, it would/could not finish backups. I tried many times, got very frustrated and had no patience left. So I went in search of an alternative and found blogvault and couldn’t be happier. The price is very reasonable and in my dashboard over there I can do the One-click Site Restoration in case something happens.
To keep myself somewhat organized, I started using Trello about a year ago and I love it. It replaced the Evernote I was using previously which I never really got the hang of it. But with Trello I have created Boards for different aspect of my life, personal and business. And within each board, I have many ‘cards’ to keep info on. You should check it out, it really changed my every day life.
Plan the layout of your homepage
And effective homepage design goes beyond looking ‘pretty’ — it’s about making it easy for your visitors to understand what you do, what problems you solve, and what services you offer that will help them.
